Reaching for Life Series One

Judy's Story of Waycross

A fun and charming look into the life of a big family of seven in the 1940's.  Told from the view of the youngest child,  Judy.  Anyone can find something to remind them of their own young life . The Reach family lived, laughed,  and had trials and emotions as every family does.

Love was always what bound them together.

Waycross Post Office

After church we would walk across the street to the beautiful Post Office where Daddy worked.  His office was upstairs with the government offices. There was even a jail cell we could play in if no bad guys were inside.

There were scary things like Pistols, Rifles, Billy Sticks and Handcuffs.

Look but don't touch!

First Baptist Church

Our family spent a lot of time at this downtown Waycross church between  Sunday School, Church Service, Training Union and Prayer Meeting. Lessons of  love and faith were taught and learned.

Mother made sure we were dressed perfectly with the boys in jackets plus shined shoes; I had on  ruffled dresses and frilly hats.

Our corner lot across from Williams Heights School

The Reach Home on Clifton Grove

My Mother and Daddy found this large beautiful corner lot as they were taking a walk one day in 1940.  They decided to build just what they wanted, and they did! The big front and backyard made a perfect playground for me, my brothers and sister and all of the neighborhood kids.

A day at the beach with Mama, Patsy, Kenny, Judy and Tommy

We went to Laura S. Walker Park, Fernandina, Satilla River,  Crooked River or anywhere we could swim, inner tube and have fun in the water. On hot South Georgia summer days, any cool water felt refreshing. Maybe it gave Mother a break from cooking, washing and cleaning, although she usually did pack a  picnic basket.

Mother and Daddy loved to take us all for rides in the car. We could all pile in and maybe end up at a Dairy Queen. Treats for us all with chocolate dipped cones being the favorite. Mama nestled next to Daddy in the front with Patsy next to the window. Kenny, Tommy and I enjoyed the large back seat, trying to behave.

Uncle George flew his WWII plane into Waycross

Uncle George Ashley was a General in the Air Force who flew in World War II. Mother was proud of her brother.

We all adored him and he was our  generous and interesting uncle who brought us many "treasures"  from his world travels.
